Carpet Bathroom to Luxury Space

We officially closed on Star Manor July 6th, 2022.

That meant we could “officially” get started on the many projects that may or may not have already been underway.

If you’ve kept up with Star Manor and the content I have available so far, you know that we have 11 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms in this Second Empire beast. Each bathroom needs some serious love. When I say serious, I mean it. On the second floor, there was a purple carpeted bathroom with a toilet, shower, and vanity. The toilet eventually started to have plumbing problems, so we only used that space to shower quickly and get the heck out. We visited my family not too long ago in Long Beach, Long Island and collectively, took about 6 showers in a 2-day stay at their home. When you don’t have a comfortable or clean-feeling space, you really start to miss it!

We got started by removing all our toiletry items from the room. Then, Matt disconnected the sink in order to remove the vanity I planned to refinish. Our primary goal was to create a luxury bathroom on a dollar store budget.

Before we did anything, I created my bathroom inspiration through Canva.com.

My goal here was to identify things we could reuse and bring back to life, while finding small pieces to complement the space. The one thing I will note here is that we actually ending up going with bright white curtains, since blue ones would have been a little too overbearing.

After removing the vanity, Matt started work on ripping the gross carpet out of there as well as taking existing shelves off the wall. We knew we would find some black mold, since showers and carpets never mix. So, we took care of the mold and Matt began patching up some holes in the wall. This process took about 1-2 days to allow for proper drying before we could get back in there again to insert the flooring.

While Matt worked on the floor at night, I got whatever painting I could get done during the morning and lunches. Initially, we started painting the walls an off-white color with a tint of yellow. When this paint dried, it was far more yellow than we had hoped. A quick trip to Lowes for some more bright white paint did the trick here, so we quickly painted over that mishap.

While I painted the walls white, I also got started on the blue trim. I never thought I would be the person to paint color trim, but I really appreciate how it turned out - you will likely see this trend continue throughout our house remodel (wink, wink).

Next, we spray painted the lighting fixtures that would go back into the bathroom. These items were there originally so there wasn’t much cost associated with cleaning, painting, and putting them back in the wall.

Matt was an absolutely gem and did the dirty work of thoroughly cleaning the shower, making it shine as if it were brand new! We replaced the shower head and deep cleaned all other parts of the shower.

Here is our pricing breakdown, give or take some items that I can’t find the receipt for!

Our overall project total came to $483.92
